The Salkantay Trek Short is one of the greatest alternative treks to the Inca Trail reaching to Machu Picchu. The Salkantay trek is a great opportunity to get in touch with nature and see local villages as you hike past the Salkantay Mountain and a rural area of Peru.
Before the trek, your guide will meet you at your hotel for an in-depth briefing. This provides an opportunity to ask questions and do any last-minute shopping before leaving Cusco.
The itinerary below is an example. Hiking times are an average and will vary depending on the group. Additionally, lunch and camp sites may change to meet the needs of the group and conditions.
DAY 1: CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – CHALLACANCHA- SORAYPAMPA
We’ll start the trip early in the morning from your hotel and driving about 2-3 hours to Mollepata, where we will make a short stop to use the restrooms and last minute shop. Then we’ll drive to the trailhead where we’ll start the Salkantay trek.
We should start our hike around 9:30 am. We’ll hike around 9 Km to Soraypampa where we’ll have lunch and which is also our campsite. We’ll have time after lunch to rest shortly before we hike to Humantay Lake which is about a 3 hour trip. It’s a tough hike since we’ll be at an altitude of around 4200 meters, but the view of this glacier fed Lake worth the effort!
Tonight will be the coldest night along the trail, so may want wear a few layers to keep warm!
DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY PASS – CHAULLAY
We’ll awake early for what will likely be the hardest day of your Salkantay trek! After an early breakfast, we’ll hike up to the Salkantay Pass at 4650 meters in about 3 hours.
After about a 2 hour hike, we’ll get to Huayracmachay where we’ll have lunch and rest shortly. After lunch, we’ll hike another 3 hours through warmer climates to Chaullay which is at about 2900 meters. Where our campsite will be set.
DAY 3 CHAULLAY – LA PLAYA – AGUAS CALIENTES
We’ll start our hike from Chaullay to La Playa around 6:00 am. We’ll hike through warmer climates for about 6 hours, enjoying the green vegetation, when we reach La Playa, we’ll have lunch and rest before taking the local transportation to Hidroelectrica.
From Hidroelectrica we’ll walk along the tracks, for about 3 hours before we end up in Aguas Calientes. We’ll overnight in a hotel, before your trip to Machu Picchu the following day!
DAY 4: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHUPICCHU – CUSCO
Leaving at 6am, you can hike up to Machu Picchu or take a bus. We’ll have a 2 hour guided tour, then, you’ll have time to wander around by your own until it’s time to go back to Aguas Calientes to catch our train.
If you’re interested in hiking up Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain, you’ll need to book this well in advance since there are limited spaces, and pay for perms is mandatory.
