SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVITY:
Head to Machu Picchu on this newly discovered and less crowded route. This 4-day hike will offer you amazing landscapes with waterfalls and Inca ruins, as well as the opportunity to go through a beautiful and remote Puerta del Sol and visit impressive archaeological sites on the way to Ollantaytambo.
Before the trek, your guide will meet you at your hotel for an in-depth briefing. This provides an opportunity to ask questions and do any last-minute shopping before leaving Cusco.
The itinerary below is an example. Hiking times are an average and will vary depending on the group. Additionally, lunch and camp sites may change to meet the needs of the group and conditions.
DETAILS OF THE ACTIVITY.
DAY 1: CUSCO CHOQUEQUILLA RAFQA SOCMA PEROLNIYOC QORIMARCA
Early in the morning, we will pick you up and head to Choquequilla, a small ceremonial place where the Incas worshiped the moon. Then we will arrive at the starting point of the hike, Rafq’a, and we will meet the riders who accompany us on the hike. The first stop of our walk will be in the small community of Socma. Continue with the Perolniyoc waterfall viewpoint, an opportunity to stop to take photos and have a snack. We will continue to the campsite (3700 m above sea level). You should arrive at the campsite at lunchtime. After lunch, we will have the opportunity to explore the archaeological site of Q’orimarca, which once served as a control point for the Incas.
DAY 2: PUCCAQASA KUYCHICASSA CHOQUETACARPO
Today we will have an early start and it will also be the most challenging day. After 3 hours of walking, we will take you to the top of the first pass of Puccaqasa (4370 m). We will have time to enjoy the view and we will also have lunch there. Then, we will walk to Kuychicassa (approximately 2 hours), the highest pass of the trek (4450 m). From here, descend to the sacred site, the Incas called Intipunku (Puerta del Sol), overlooking the snowy Veronica mountain. In the afternoon we will arrive at our Choquetacarpo campsite.
DAY 3: KACHIQATA OLLANTAYTAMBO AGUAS CALIENTES
Today it will be simply downhill and our first stop will be at the Kachiqata quarry, where the Incas were intercepted by the Spanish. Around noon, your walk comes to an end. We will have free time in Ollantaytambo before taking the short train ride to Aguas Calientes. Spend the night in a comfortable hotel before tomorrow’s visit to Machu Picchu.
DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU CUSCO
This day we will have two options or we will walk at 4:30 am or we will take the bus to Machu Picchu. In Machu Picchu, you will have a guided tour for approximately two hours and then you will have your free time to enjoy. Fantastic place, or if you wish, ascent towards the Huayna Picchu mountain (subject to availability).
