LIMA – CUSCO CITY TOUR- MARAS MORAY – VALLE SAGRADO – MACHUPICCHU
Welcome to Peru!
The Inca Empire existed for only a century but in that short time, it left a legacy that has turned Peru into one of the countries with the most cultural wealth in the Americas. For eight days, you will discover the main attractions of the country, from Lima on the Pacific coast to Machu Picchu, the ‘lost city of the Incas’, on the top of the Andes. Discover beautiful colonial cities, the archaeological sites of ancient civilizations and explore some of the most spectacular landscapes of the planet in an unforgettable experience.
Before the Tour, your guide will meet you at your hotel for an in-depth briefing. This provides an opportunity to ask any questions you might have.
DAY 1: LIMA ARRIVAL
A member of our staff is waiting for you at the airport, with a sign with your name on it, to transport you to your hotel, where all is set for your arrival. Lima is a friendly city, so relax and get ready for the next morning.
DAY 2: LIMA CITY TOUR! (B)
The city tour will start at 14:00 pm. Lima is a beautiful and historic city. During colonial times it was the center of the economy and, on your visit to the Plaza de Armas, the main square, you will see many buildings reminiscent of those in Spain. Particular highlights are the Archbishop’s Palace, the Cathedral (just ashort walk away from the plaza, located in the Santo Domingo Church on the Plaza de la Vera Cruz) and San Francisco Convent. The Convent is one of the most visited religious buildings in the city due to its famous catacombs which hold the remains of around 70,000 people. We will also visit the Huaca Pucllana archaeological complex, another jewel in the cultural mix of the city.
DAY 03: ARRIVAL CUSCO – AFTERNOON CITY TOUR (B)
Breakfast at hotel; pick up from the hotel and transfer to the airport for your flight to Cusco, the ancient Inca capital of the Incas. A member of our staff is waiting for you at the airport, with a sign with your name on it, to transport you to your hotel.
The city tour will start at 13:00 pm. Today we have a guided tour of Cusco and its nearby ruins. The city, once capital of the extensive Inca Empire, has seen many changes since Francisco Pizarro’s men took the city with such apparent ease in November 1533. We explore the city by foot to appreciate its superbly constructed Inca walls and architecturally extravagant colonial churches and palaces. This also includes a visit of Koricancha, the ancient Golden Temple of the Sun. After this we take a short drive to visit the monolithic walls of Sacsayhuaman along with Tambomachay, better known as ‘the bath of the Inca’. Both sites are spectacularly set above the city. In the afternoon you may have time to explore some of the central parts of the city and a chance to look at some of the great varieties of local craft work.
DAY 4 | CUSCO – MARAS – MORAY – CUSCO (B)
You will start a tour to the archaeological sites of Maras and Moray. Maras presents a fantastic landscape; it is an impressive complex of extraction composed by large salt deposits. The archaeological complex of Moray consists of mysterious circular platforms used as an agricultural research centre as they could simulate the conditions of the different ecological floors of the empire. After the tour, you will be transferred to the hotel in Cusco.
DAY 5: SACRED VALLEY (B, L)
In the morning, after taking a revitalizing breakfast, your guide will pick you up at your hotel to start your tour to Sacred Valley. There, you can see the beautiful landscape with corn and potatoes and a whole variety of colors ranging from the green mountains to the deep red of the clay. We will visit the Pisac Market with handicrafts and traditional Fair and then continue on to Urubamba, the capital of this valley, where we can also do some shopping. We then drive on to Ollantaytambo, a beautiful city with huge terraces and a unique charm. On the way back to Cusco, we stop at the village of Chinchero, famous for textiles and chapel. This will be our last stop for shopping before returning to Cusco. Finally, we’ll leave you at your hotel to take a rest.
DAY 06: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO (B)
Breakfast at Hotel; you will be picked up from your hotel at 5:30AM for your transfer to Ollantaytambo station. You will travel by train to the town of Aguas Calientes.
One of the world’s most famous sights awaits you today. Get an early start today and hop on a bus that will make its way up a zigzag road right to the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. The site is believed to be an estate for a former Inca emperor in the 15th century (among other theories) and is today the most famous icon of the Incan culture. During the morning you’ll take a tour to explore all of this magnificent complex’ highlights such as the Main Square, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sundial, the Royal Quarters and the Temple of the Three Windows with cemeteries. After having been shown the site’s gems, you’ll have time to freely explore this wonder of the world on your own to fully take in the spectacular setting of this ancient marvel in the midst of spectacular mountain landscapes. Maybe walk the last part of the famous Inca Trail to the Intipunku gate or simply take in the majestic scenery for yourself. Later on, you’ll make your way back to Ollantaytambo by train to take a bus from there back to Cusco, where you will have the rest of the evening to let all those fantastic images of Machu Picchu sink into your memories.
In the afternoon, we will return to our hotel in Cusco.
