DAY 1: CUSCO CACHORA SANTA ROSA A / C
The first day begins in the town of Cachora, 4 hours by car from Cusco. Upon leaving Cachora, the road descends to the Apurimac Valley.
Fantastic views of snow-capped peaks in the distance with the Apurimac Valley extended before us throughout the day. After a few hours of walking, to get to have the first views of Choquequirao he sat across the valley.
The overnight camp is in Santa Rosa (2200 m / 7215 ft), which is across the Apurimac River. As the camp is a little further than most groups, it is one of the quietest places to camp during the entire walk, so we can enjoy the beautiful landscape that surrounds us without distractions.
DAY 2: SANTA ROSA – CHOQUEQUIRAO: D / A / C
Today is probably the most difficult day of the walk. To reach Choquequirao, you must return on the opposite side of the Apurimac Valley, which involves ascending about 800 m / 2624 feet. over a distance of 14 km / 8.7 miles through hot and humid conditions. It is quite difficult, but the view to mix with the great variety of flora and fauna is worth it.
Throughout the day, you will see a wide variety of bromeliads, orchids and bamboo stalks. Hopefully see birds like quetzales, toucans and a variety of hummingbirds. After approximately 5 hours of walking, you will arrive at the camp near Choquequirao (3050 m / 10,005 feet) and will settle for the night. If the weather is clear, the views of the sunset from here are incredible and we can be lucky to see the Condors flying over the valley below.
DAY 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO – CHIQUISKA D / A / C
Today’s approach is to explore Choquequirao, get up early, start a guided tour to see the most important and interesting sections of the city.
Learn about the Inca culture and the close relationship between Choquequirao and Machu Picchu.
Compared to Machu Picchu, little is known about Choquequirao although it has been known for much longer. Originally, discovered in the seventeenth century by the Spanish, it was abandoned and forgotten until the last years. Only 25% of the city has been explored and many of its secrets are still waiting to be discovered.
After the tour, we will begin the walk back to Cachora along the route we came. The camp for tonight is Chiquiska (1800 m / 5905 feet) at the base of the valley next to the Apurimac River.
