The citadel has been fighting for years with the waste generated by tourists, which prompted a Unesco alert a few years ago. Today, tons of plastics are recycled and since this year the used cooking oil is treated so that it does not contaminate the Vilcanota anymore
The donation of a compact plastic plant for Machu Picchu, helps the processing and recycling of plastics in the area that has increased. This has contributed to compact up to 4 times the volume of one ton of plastic waste per day generated by tourism in that area, thus allowing its evacuation and reducing its accumulation in the place. These encouraging results are an example of what can be achieved when private companies and state authorities collaborate in pursuit of the same objective and have the support of tourists to preserve our ecosystem
This is also the first step to continue promoting the Waste Management Plan and to avoid that the waste that the tourist activity leaves daily has a harmful effect on the landscape and ecosystem of Machu Picchu Now, the plastic waste is processed and recycled with more speed; later, they are transported to km 59 of the town of Pachar, where the Municipality of Machu Picchu has the transfer point and the compacted material is commercialized.
The rapid recovery of Machu Picchu is only the beginning of a long project that will continue its course with the implementation of an appropriate treatment of organic and inorganic waste, which is still waiting for feasibility. Thanks to all this, and to future projects to be carried out for the benefit of the area, we hope that Machu Picchu will become an example of a sustainable tourism city in the world by 2021.
